Chelsea Maggard Bray, 25, was served a criminal complaint summons by Officer Michael Napier of the Martin Police Department. According to court documents, Bray allegedly “caused injuries to her dog when she mistreated and abandoned the dog for at least a two week period.”
“[Bray] failed to provide the dog with any food, shelter, and water for the two week period,” the criminal complaint said.
Bray’s summons said she was served Jan. 26, but the citation said the alleged incident took place earlier last month.
Officer Napier said the department responded to a concerned citizen’s report that a dog had been left out in the cold, and that Martin Police Officer Jonathan Holbrooks was the first on the scene.
“It was chained to the end of a trailer, on a chain just long enough not to choke,” Napier said.
According to Napier, the veterinarians who cared for the dog after its rescue said it would have died had they not intervened.
Napier said the dog, now named Zeus, is safely in foster care.
Zeus’ rescue was the third dog his department worked to save in a two-week period, including a puppy that had been found in the cold, and another dog that had been shot. Both those dogs are also recovering.
“Being a small department, with not a lot of resources, and these are not what you’d call our typical duties, we are very dependent on the Floyd County Animal Shelter, Dumas Rescue, just to name two big ones, and the emergency veterinarians that are on call,” Napier said.
Bray is scheduled to appear in Floyd County District Court for her arraignment on the charge on Feb. 17.
